Creating content for your community website

A final note

Hope this has at least given you some ideas to go off and write some good interesting content for your website. Perhaps you have some already which you will just need to adapt for the web. If you are doing this it is important to realize that web content is very different from printed articles. Content on the web needs to allow for skim reading. Here are some tips to make text easier to read:

  • break up chunks of text with bullet points and subheadings
  • Use things like bold and different font colours to emphasize certain words/paragraphs
  • Use images amongst your text to add interest to a page and break up text. Be careful only to add images that are relevant and don't overuse them.
  • Put your events diary into a table format to make it easy and clear to read.

I know I have mentioned this before but I can't overstress it - be prepared to maintain and update the content of the site. This may take time but will create a good impression of your group. Remember! A website can be a great asset to a community group but only if it is kept up to date with relevant and interesting content.
