Search Engine Optimisation
Getting your site listed
on Directories and other websites
This guide is written primarily to help
community groups in Torfaen. It is to help you get your link onto directories
and other websites in order that you can increase the number of visitors
to your site.
I've created a list of some directories
I have found on the Net. Just go to their site by clicking on the links
below. Some are UK wide, others Wales and Torfaen specific. You will
find that some have submission boxes where you can input your website
address wheras others you will have to email.
UK wide Directories
The Open Directory
http://dmoz.org/
Describes themselves as the largest human edited directory on the web.
To add your site and advice on submitting your URL (webaddress) go to
http://dmoz.org/add.html.
Submitting your site to the Open Directory will also get you listed on
partner sites such as AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google and Lycos.
Yahoo Open Directory
http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/United_Kingdom/Wales/
Counties_and_Regions/Gwent/Districts/Torfaen/Community/
Once you’ve found the appropriate category for your site (in most
of your cases this would be community), click suggest a site. Make sure
you select the Standard Submission which is free.
UK Villages
http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/torfaen.htm
A UK wide website which acts as a community notice board. You can add
any information about your group or organization for free. Go to the relevant
region (i.e. Torfaen, Abersychan), click on add a group or society and
enter the relevant information.
Brit Info
http://www.britinfo.net/
A network of sites that promote exchanges of information across Britain.
On the home page you can search for your community, e.g. Pontypool and
Cwmbran. Then from the menu menu on the left go to Community/Directory/Charities
and Voluntary Organisation and click the “add your free link”.
It’s quite a long winded process to add your link but you will eventually
get there.
Search Uno
http://www.searchuno.co.uk/
Under the section for Wales on the Home Page, go to the More Wales link.
Then click on the sub category Torfaen. You will notice you can be more
specific and add it to the sub categories of Abersychan and Blaenavon,
Pontypool or Cwmbran. Click add your link for free to submit your website.
Towns Online
http://www.towns-online.co.uk/en/
Click on Torfaen and then add details of your website. I think it’s
a fairly new website and perhaps not well used at present as there are
not many links included. It’s free though so still worth adding
your link to.
Wales Directories
Wales on the Web
http://www.walesontheweb.org/
The gateway to internet resources relating to Wales. A very useful resource
with a section dedicated to the voluntary sector. Click on the voluntary
sector link from the home page and then go to Suggest
a resource link in the menu near the top of the page.
This is Wales.net
http://www.thisiswales.net/community/
Email your group to the Wales Community Pages. At present there is only
a Cwmbran link but you could suggest them adding a Pontypool or Blaenavon
link, for example.
South Wales Index
http://www.southwalesindex.co.uk/
Add your site for free to this online Directory for Wales. It has a category
specifically for Torfaen which is further split into sub categories. Click
on the Submit a site on the left hand side of the page to add your details.
Wales Pages
http://wales.great-british-pages.co.uk
Find the appropriate category from the list and then click add a site.
You will need to register with them before you can add your link.
Search Wales
http://www.searchwales.com
Add your link to this site by filling in the online form found from the
home page. Pontypool currently has only one entry so you can help put
Pontypool on the map.
Torfaen Specific websites

http://www.blaenavon.biz

http://www.costar-cwmbran.co.uk/links.html

group, address, and tel no (if you want) and also your website address
